Jest for pun!
Unless you live in a
remote part of the world, you're bound to notice signs, message
boards, bill posters, newspaper headlines and advertisements.
Some of these headlines and phrases contain puns, which are play
on words. For example, the words aisle, isle and
I'll. Same sound but three different meaning.
Aisle reminds me of the famous joke of the bride-to-be who, upon
walking down the aisle, promptly said, 'Aisle
altar hymn'.
Words, puns and headlines, either in
phrases or short snappy slogans, can be used in your
competition tiebreakers to win
holidays,
cars and exciting prizes, as well
as reaping rewards as successful business slogans too.
Want to win yourself a computer, then how
about?
I buy computers from X store because... customers 'enter',
'save' and 'return'!
For a computer shop, your business slogan may
be... 'Enter, save and return a-gain
and a-gain'. Or quite simply,
'Enter, save and return!'
I've noticed some really interesting shop names when around
town, such as, 'Million-hairs'
and, 'Curl up and dye!'
A magazine gardening feature on sowing seeds,
hoe-ing weeds and planting trees, inspired me to come up with,
'hoe, sow good, offering tree-mendous
value at every branch!'
Fancy a cup of coffee? It's not a 'mugs gain' when
you use play on words: Coffee every
Thirst-day morning!
You'll find the 'blends justify the beans' when you're awarded a
'sip-loma' for your slogans!
I entered a competition to win a tool cabinet
at a DIY store, and noticed that the shelves in-store were
packed with goods. The store produced leaflets showing its
customers how to tackle simple repair jobs and I thought that's
a good idea, it inspires self confidence.
I decided to use
self confidence as a starting point for my slogan, and playing
around with words came up with the phrase,
'shelf-confidence'.
My final tiebreaker of, 'I buy from
store because... it's pack-ed with shelf-confidence!'
scooped me a very useful prize of a professional
DIY tool
cabinet.
I began to compile a notebook of useful puns and phrases and
even on holiday lazing round the pool, I'd ask family and
friends for ideas. How many phrases can you think of do
with animals? It's surprising what you can come up - gnu
dimension in, no point lion to you, fun and gir-affter, a-mouse-ment
arcade. Even non-animal puns came up - wasp a way to
go, bee-hive yourself.
Whilst many compers like to complete their tiebreakers in the
maximum words allowed, for instance, twelve words, I prefer to
make mine short and snappy. For example, 'gold-en
opera-tune-ity' scooped a £2,000 music
centre in a golden oldies music contest. And all for two
words!
This simple method developed and 4,000 puns and many months
later, Pun-ch Lines! was born.
